GlobalSat BU-353-S4

GlobalSat BU-353-S4 USB GPS Receiver User Manual

1. Introducere

The GlobalSat BU-353-S4 is a compact USB GPS receiver designed for reliable and accurate positioning. It integrates a highly sensitive, low-power SiRF Star IV GPS chipset, offering superior performance in challenging environments such as urban areas and dense foliage. This device utilizes SiRF CGEE (Client Generated Extended Ephemeris) technology to predict satellite positions up to three days in advance, enabling quick satellite acquisition (less than 15 seconds under most conditions without network assistance). Its MicroPower mode ensures continuous operation in a hot-start-like condition with minimal power consumption.

3. Configurare

3.1 Instalarea driverului

  1. Conectați receptorul: Plug the BU-353-S4 USB connector into an available USB port on your computer.
  2. Automatic Driver Installation (Windows 7): For Windows 7 (32-bit), drivers may install automatically via Windows Update.
  3. Manual Driver Installation (Windows 7 64-bit / Other OS): For Windows 7 (64-bit) and other operating systems, you may need to manually download and install the Prolific PL2303 chipset drivers. These are typically available on the GlobalSat official website or Prolific's website. Refer to your operating system's device manager to identify the COM port assigned to the receiver after installation.
  4. Compatibilitate Linux: The device is generally plug-and-play with Ubuntu Linux 12.10 and Linux Mint 14 using `gpsd`. Configure `gpsd` to connect to the device, typically on `/dev/ttyUSB0`.

3.2 Plasarea

For optimal performance, place the BU-353-S4 in a location with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. The integrated magnetic base allows for secure attachment to metallic surfaces, such as a vehicle roof. The rubber-like ring on the bottom protects surfaces from scratches. While the device is sensitive enough to receive signals through most car windshields, heat-rejecting metal films may interfere with signal reception.

3.3 Indicator LED

The receiver features a small LED indicator. A solid light indicates the device is powered on. A flashing light signifies that the device has successfully acquired satellites and calculated a position fix. This LED is useful for troubleshooting signal acquisition.

4. Instrucțiuni de utilizare

4.1 Conectarea la software

Once drivers are installed, the BU-353-S4 appears as a standard COM port. Most GPS-related software applications can connect to this virtual serial port to receive NMEA-0183 formatted data. Ensure your navigation or mapping software is configured to use the correct COM port and baud rate (typically 4800).

4.2 Signal Acquisition

Cu un clar view of the sky, the receiver typically acquires satellites and establishes a position fix quickly. The SiRF CGEE technology aids in rapid cold starts. If the device has been powered down for a short period and has not moved significantly, it will reacquire signals very quickly (hot start).

4.3 NMEA-0183 Output

The BU-353-S4 outputs standard NMEA-0183 sentences, making it compatible with a wide range of GPS-aware applications. By default, GPRMC, GPGSA, and GPGGA sentences are emitted every second, while GPGSV sentences (satellite information) are emitted every 5 seconds.

4.4 WAAS/EGNOS Support

The device is designed to be WAAS/EGNOS-capable, which are Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) that provide enhanced accuracy. However, due to a known firmware bug in the SiRF Star IV chipset, this model may not correctly utilize WAAS/EGNOS signals. Standard GPS functionality remains unaffected.

5. Întreținere

5.1 Curățare

Wipe the exterior of the receiver with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the casing or internal components. Ensure the device is dry before reconnecting it to a power source.

5.2 Îngrijirea cablurilor

Handle the USB cable with care. Avoid sharp bends, kinks, or excessive pulling, which can damage the internal wiring. When placing the cable through a window or door, ensure it is not pinched, which could lead to damage over time.

5.3 Depozitare

When not in use, store the receiver in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Coiling the cable loosely can help prevent damage.

6. Depanare

6.1 No GPS Signal / No Position Fix

  • Verificați plasarea: Ensure the receiver has a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. Move it away from buildings, dense trees, or metallic structures that might block signals.
  • Verificați indicatorul LED: A flashing LED indicates a position fix. If the LED is solid, the device is powered but not yet locked onto satellites.
  • Instalare driver: Confirm that the correct drivers are installed and the device is recognized as a COM port in your computer's Device Manager.
  • Configurare software: Ensure your GPS application is configured to use the correct COM port and baud rate (typically 4800).

6.2 Incorrect or Inaccurate Position

  • Cer senin View: Even a partial obstruction can degrade accuracy.
  • Interferență: Keep the receiver away from other electronic devices that might cause interference.
  • WAAS/EGNOS: Note that due to a known firmware bug, WAAS/EGNOS augmentation may not function, which can affect the highest level of accuracy.

6.3 Windows 10 Compatibility Issues

Some Windows 10 navigation applications may not directly recognize the GPS data from the BU-353-S4. A third-party application like GPSComplete (from `gpssensordrivers.com`) can act as a bridge, mapping the COM port data to a Windows GPS Sensor, allowing various applications to receive location data.
